Seller's Description
1936 AC 16/80 SPORTS ROADSTER SN3351 REG:AC1680 VIN N0:UBS7/404 ENG NO:L/446 $400,000 (To be sold UN-Registered & with Vic RWC) 'THE SAVILLE ROW OF MOTORDOM' With a total of just 42 AC 16/80's hand built, to special order, the AC provided outstanding competition to the 2.5 Litre SS100, aimed at the higher echelon of buyer, who wanted something more bespoke. Featuring an Alloy Cylinder Block of 2 Litre capacity and a Moss Syncromesh Gearbox the AC was capable of reaching 90 miles an hour with relative ease, and touring at spends of 70 miles plus, for hours. First registered on the 21st of November 1936 to one Richard Wilkinson, the AC was put to the test only a month later when on the 26th of December 1936 it was entered into the Australian Grand Prix located in Victor Harbour, South Australia. Having suffered the loss of a leg as a result of a previous racing accident, R.Wilkinson, who had intended to drive the 16/80 himself, gave the reins of his brand new AC to George Martin, after his Alfa Romeo was stricken by mechanical failure. Although dicing for the lead with Les Murphy in his P-Type MG for the majority of the race, G.Martin spun the 16/80 into the sand at the Nagawooka Hairpin with just 36 miles to go, and after spending 20 minutes to dig the car out was able to finish the race in 12th position. Australian Delivered, and truly competitive, this Pre War Gentleman's racer comes with full documentation of ownership, original registration, competition history, period race photos, close to every magazine article ever written about the 16/80's and more!
