THE STORY
General Motors designer Harley Earl is credited with convincing GM to build a two-seat sports car for the American market.
Launched in 1953, the resulting Chevrolet Corvette quickly earned the mantle of “America’s Sport’s Car” and the model is still produced today.
1956 was the second year of production for the V8 models and the cars featured a new body style, improved convertible top, real glass roll up windows and an optional hardtop.
All engines were 265 cubic inches and there were 3 versions – 210 HP (single 4-barral carb), 225 HP (dual 4-barrel) or 240
HP (high-lift cam/dual 4-barrel). The latter 2 were high compression versions with redesigned cylinder heads.
Transmissions were either the 3-speed manual or optional 2-speed automatic and the axle ratio was 3.55:1.
Only 3,467 examples were built, making this the 3rd lowest volume year in Corvette’s long history.
THE CAR
Gorgeous 1956 Chevrolet Corvette Convertible recently restored in Onyx Black with Silver Cove and Red Waffle Pattern interior. This car has a new Black convertible top.
Powered by its very strong, number’s matching 265ci Chevy V8, this is the high compression 225 HP version (engine suffix GR).
This car has its original factory tagged dual quad Will Carter Four Barrel (WCFB) carburettors that have been professionally rebuilt.
It also has it original cast aluminium intake manifold which was specific to the dual-quad carburettor cars.
The engine is sweet, has plenty of torque and the car is an absolute joy to drive.
Power is put to the road via the car’s original and desirable close ratio 3-speed manual transmission.
Original options include a signal-seeking transistor Delco Wonderbar car radio and power top (currently disconnected). The car has its original, correct blue vinyl washer bottle.
Recent mechanical work includes new brakes including master cylinder, wheel cylinders and brake shoes, new radial whitewall tyres and new kingpins.
All chrome and stainless steel is in excellent condition, all gauges work and the interior is in fantastic condition.
As with all correct 1956 Corvettes, the twin tail pipes exit through the rear chrome bumper.
This car is a rolling work of art that only continues to appreciate with time.
