Here we have a truly unique car that displays two, completely different characters. One is an exuberant expression of the talent one Australia’s favourite artists, and the other is a remarkably original survivor, a wonderfully authentic example of one of the earliest Volvo 140s around. If Pro Hart had a mantra it probably would’ve been “if it moves, paint it; if it doesn’t move, paint it”. Renowned for painting anything from letter boxes to fridges to fence posts, Pro Hart decorated this 144S in 1984. Signed by the artist in three places, it features some of his favourite themes including brolgas, dragonflies and ants, the last amusingly clustered around their ‘nest’ in the fuel filler. Verified and valued at $20,000 by Menzies Art Brands in 2012 this moveable feast for the eyes is a remarkable, portable showcase of Pro Hart’s art. On the other side, this 1967 144S is one of the earliest 140s around and is in a remarkable state of preservation, having seemed to escape molestation. It’s had a life and a half but it’s looks to have never been repainted (except by the artist) and it retains many of the features unique to the early cars. The car still has its original Robo headlamps and the original rubber mats are still there, although the front one has turned to bakelite and crumbles if looked at. One feature of particular note it the pairing of the auto gearbox with the twin carb, B18B engine. I’m reliably informed that the autos normally came with a single carb engine but the chassis number confirms this car is ‘right’. Recent recommissioning includes overhauled brakes (fantastic, triangulated brakes) carburettors, fuel tank, heater tap, new exhaust, timing gears, fuel and water pumps and rare, wider 164E wheels and nave plates. The car drives beautifully, it’s easy to forget just how good a 140 is to drive. It’s time now to move it on so we can explore other things.
