THE STORY Introduced in 1972, the Mercedes-Benz 450 SLC was a grand touring coupe derived from the celebrated R107 SL roadster. By 1974, the 450 SLC had firmly established itself as one of Mercedes-Benz’s premier luxury performance cars, combining the refinement of a full-size sedan with the sporting character of a two-door coupe.
Under the hood, it featured a 4.5-litre V8 engine paired with a smooth three-speed automatic transmission. This powertrain delivered strong, effortless performance, while the long-wheelbase chassis and independent suspension provided the poise and comfort Mercedes was known for.
Visually, the 450 SLC stood out with its elegant pillarless design, long bonnet, and distinctive rear quarter windows that set it apart from the SL roadster. Inside, the cabin was sophisticated, featuring leather upholstery, rich wood trim, and meticulous craftsmanship throughout. Power windows, air conditioning, and advanced safety features such as crumple zones and a reinforced safety cell made it a true luxury grand tourer of its era.
There were 31,739 examples built between 1972 and 1980 and the 450 SLC represented Mercedes-Benz’s mastery of combining performance, comfort and timeless design.
THE CAR An original kilometres car, this 1974 Mercedes-Benz 450 SLC was Australian delivered to a Mr. H Mayer in Strathfield, NSW on the 25th of March, 1974.
Finished in gorgeous Caledonia Green (Kaledoniengrün) with a complimenting green leather interior, this beauty has its original owner's manuals and service books, as well as its build sheet.
Last serviced in 2022 with 100,004 kms on the clock, she now only has 102,701 kms.
This car has been extremely well looked after - the paint is excellent, as is the interior. The original leather seats have some natural patina but there are no tears or rips. The car has a working sunroof and all electronics and gauges work as they should.
An aftermarket Continental CD/Radio/MP3/Bluetooth head unit has been installed, and there is an extensive receipts file for work done over the years.
Mechanically the engine is strong, the transmission changes smoothly and the steering and brakes are excellent.
This car has been previously registered in NSW and VIC, and is now on historic registration in SA.
