Unveiled at the September 1981 IAA Frankfurt Motor Show, the Porsche 944 had serious pedigree, being the production road legal version of the 1981 924 GTP, which had run at 1981 24 hours of Le Mans, finishing in 7th outright. Powered by Porsche’s 2.5L inline 4 cylinder (derived from the 928’s 5L V8), producing 161hp, driven through the transaxle to the rear wheels with a 50.7%/49.3% weight distribution the 944’s dynamics were exceptionally well regarded, even winning ‘Car and Driver’ magazine’s ‘Best Handling Production Car in America’ award in 1984.
Sold new on the 12th of October 1984 by ‘Hamiltons’ of South Yarra with the registration ‘CIG960’ this 944 called Collingwood home until 1987, when it moved to East Melbourne, before another move in 1993 to Doncaster East, where it has resided since.
Retaining it’s original Porsche Warranty Card as well as it’s Hamiltons ‘Service Record’ folder containing original Hamiltons service invoices covering up to 1989 and subsequent invoicing since. Important invoices to note are a 2002 invoice from Auto Coupe detailing the reconditioning of the 944’s cylinder head and clutch replacement (at 127,419km) as well as the most recent invoice (September 2025, at 152,218km), from ‘Hartech Automotive Services’ detailing the cambelt, water pump, radiator and engine mount replacement, as well as a service.
Finished in it’s original colour scheme of ‘Light Bronze Metallic’ complemented by Beige ‘Pin Stripe Velour’/vinyl trim, the 944 has been fitted with a set of deep dished 16” ‘Simmons F90’ alloy wheels and a rare, 4 spoke ‘Momo Corse’ steering wheel, providing period correct flare.
