The Carrera RS 3.8 was produced in 1993 as an extreme evolution of the 964 Carrera RS, that was released two years prior, as an homologation special for the iconic 3.8 RSR that claimed outright victories at Spa, Suzuka, Interlagos and class victories at LeMans and Sebring.
Built on the wide-body shell of the 964 Turbo, featuring a massive dual-plane rear spoiler and three-piece 18” ‘Speedline for Porsche’ wheels (9” front/11” rear), while retaining the 964RS’s weight savings, the RS 3.8 was a huge success, most notably shown by the production of 55 special order customer cars, when only 1 was necessary for homologation purposes (sold at nearly double that of the standard 964RS!).
This Australian Delivered Guards Red 964, originally in Carrera 4 configuration was sold by John Newell Porsche Centre on 28/02/1990 to ‘Malcolm White and Associates’ in Mosman, NSW and appears to have had four subsequent custodians, according to the accompanying detailed service history with stamped books by Porsche and independent Porsche service specialists.
In February 2013 at 178,000 kms, whilst retaining its original numbers matching engine case, the current owner tasked ‘Auto Coupe’ with the full mechanical rebuild of the 964’s motor, increasing capacity to 3746 cc (102mm bore & 76.4mm stroke) by installing ‘Mahle Motor Sport’ 993RS barrels and pistons (including machining for 102mm bore tolerance), all new engine bearings, inlet and exhaust valves, timing chains & guides, all gaskets and new fittings. Further development was again undertaken by ‘Auto Coupe’ in July 2013, when the Carrera 4 was converted into a Carrera 2 specification of rear wheel drive.
For the 964 to transform into an ‘RS 3.8 Tribute’ the bodywork and paint were entrusted to ‘Paint & Custom’ in Thornbury who rebuilt the 964 to the wide-body Turbo specification, with the sunroof delete, integrated dual-plane rear spoiler, secondary catches for the ‘frunk’ and engine lid, RS badging and 18” ‘Speedline for Porsche’ wheels.
The interior features a CAMS approved full roll cage, fibreglass Recaro buckets to keep you firmly in position, rear-seat delete now carpeted with Carrera RS embroidery, the comfort of working air-conditioning an updated OEM Porsche Classic radio with Bluetooth, twin USB power outlets and matching red seat-belts & door pulls.
All four corners are fitted with adjustable Bilstein coilovers, which allow for an awesome driving experience, backed by the 3.8L magical flat six howl, yet maintaining sensible comfort and drive-ability with the assistance of power steering and AC.
Last serviced by Auto Coupe in April 2025 at 209,377 km, the 3.8L engine has only travelled ~30,000 kms since its comprehensive engine re-build, this 964 presents in stunning condition and is ready and waiting to delight its next enthusiast owner, whether it be on a Sunday morning run through the hills or a blast around the track.
