1956 FE Holden. January 2007
In response, the FE introduced a more modern, Australian-designed body which was bigger and roomier, with a longer wheelbase and wider track. A lower roof line, flatter bonnet and boot complemented the new look. The FE series also introduced the first factory Holden station wagon.
The body was all new, with rear guards integral with the main body frame for the first time. New tail light clusters were mounted in the rear guards and there was 40 percent more glass area. The FE introduced front and rear, curved one-piece windscreens. There were many mechanical improvements, although the basic engine, gearbox and differential layout remained.
There was a new 12-volt electrical system (replacing the six volt 48-215/FJ system), a hydraulically-operated clutch and a slightly more powerful (53kW) version of the 2.15 six-cylinder engine. This power gain was achieved by an increase in compression ratio (to 6.8:1) and the fitment of stiffened piston heads and larger valves.
Steering was improved with a new design recirculating-ball steering box and new linkages. A front stabiliser bar was added and wheels were reduced to 13-inches diameter and widened to 4.5-inches. Clutch and brake pedals were of the pendant type (rather than through the floor) with the master cylinders mounted high on the firewall. The bonnet was mounted on spring-loaded hinges instead of relying on a support rod.
Interiors were totally restyled with wider, more padded seats and better sound insulation. A new dashboard helped modernise the interior, with a new, large, centre-mounted radio speaker grille, improved relocated instruments and controls and a larger, lockable glovebox.
Windscreen washers and front screen demister were optional. The station wagon (Station sedan) was announced in 1957 in two variants - Standard and Special. In its (almost) two years on the market, the FE Holden was an outstanding sales success.
