Astra SRi.
This exciting new offering in the compact market boasts sharp styling, lethal performance and is a genuine head turner. Priced at $34,990, the Astra SRi Turbo brings together turbocharged power, European styling and is an obvious target for small car performance enthusiasts.
This is a hot hatch with all the goodies, including alloys, side skirts and spoiler. It is powered by a 2.0-litre ECOTEC 16-valve turbocharged petrol engine, which combines the exhaust manifold, turbine housing, waste gate and other components in one compact unit. It delivers peak power of 147kW at 5400 rpm. The torque curve rises steeply from almost any idle speed and reaches its peak of 262Nm at 4200 rpm. The turbocharger is accommodated without modification to the body or engine compartment. The Borg Warner turbocharger is connected to the engine's lubricating and cooling circuits by separate feed lines. A charge-air intercooler increases the amount of air entering the engine, promoting efficiency and torque development. A latest generation computer system is respons-ible for overall engine management.
On the road, the integrated turbocharger is notable for its spontaneous response to acceleration movements and its flexibility, even at low engine speeds. Short flow paths between the engine exhaust duct and the turbine and the low inertia of the turbocharger promote plenty of low end torque. Matched to six-speed manual transmission this is a powerful combination. The SRi has power to burn and a restrained right foot delivers performance and plenty of smiles. The car will sprint to 100km/h in less than 8 seconds and top 200km/h if required. The SRi is a sports model and accordingly there is no auto option. Drive is to the front wheels and a sports suspension and decent four-wheel disc brakes ensure quality handling and stopping. Eighteen inch alloy wheels look the goods. The adaptive independent suspension system features electronic continuous damping control and an integrated chassis control network. Electronic stability program and traction control are fitted as standard.
Astra SRi Turbo is highly specified with climate control air conditioning, sport body kit, fog lights, leather faced seats, heated front sports seats, six stack CD player and a trip computer. Safety has not been overlooked either, with six airbags for driver and front seat passenger, head restraints, height and reach adjustable steering column and ABS.
This is a fun car to drive, emits a distinctive note when wound up, and is a delight to hustle through hilly terrain. Astra SRi is about good looks, plenty of equipment and lively performance. Fuel economy is also acceptable at around 9.7L/100kms.
