Barn find Torana A9X auction

Built in limited numbers, with just 100 hatchbacks plus 33 lightweight body shells produced by Holden to homologate the model for the Bathurst 1000, the A9X option was available on both the SL/R 5000 sedan and SS hatchback LX Torana, creating an entirely different beast to either of these road cars.

The floor pan was unique, thanks to the Salisbury rear end and rear disc brakes, while other changes included steering gear bolted directly to the platform, a 3.08:1 differential (with a 2.6:1 ratio optional), a front spoiler with brake cooling ducts and a bonnet featuring a large reverse air scoop.

These were just a few of more than 100 differences that set an A9X apart from a standard LX Torana.

The Flamenco Red with Chamois vinyl interior A9X being auctioned with no reserve price at MotorEx comes from a deceased estate and was purchased by its late third owner in 1998 after seeing it advertised for $19,000.

Back then the Torana was advertised as being in "immaculate condition, inside and out, with 99,000 original kms" and with "too many standard options to list".

As an astute collector of cars and automobilia, the late owner realised the car's future investment as one of Australia's most sought-after muscle cars and the ultimate Torana and soon after purchasing it he stored it on blocks under his Sydney house. It remained there until his death and although started regularly, not driven during his ownership.

As offered for sale by Shannons, the Torana is in 'as is' condition and will require some detailed cleaning. Mechanically, its brakes will need to be overhauled before it can take to the road again.

It is being sold with a letter of authenticity from the A9X Owners Association of Australia and Shannons expect it to sell in the $80,000-$120,000 range.
