CLASSICS - 1973 Ford XA Falcon Superbird
Preceding the XC Cobra and XB John Goss Special hardtops, Ford’s XA Falcon ‘Superbird’ hardtop was a limited release when new, and hard to come by now. Thanks to Classics Retro Rewards, a fully-restored Superbird could be yours.

Big Bird…
Back in 1973, Ford Australia unveiled the ‘Superbird’ concept at the Melbourne Motor Show. Based on an XA Falcon GT hardtop, the Superbird featured non-factory metallic silver paint, with a huge bird decal in orange that stretched from the front guards to the rear quarters on each side.
Response to the show car convinced Ford to bring the Superbird to market in a more subdued and saleable form, offering V8 performance and GT-inspired looks without the GT price tag.

…then Small Bird
Standard spec on the production Superbird included a 302 Cleveland V8, four-speed manual (with a three-speed auto optional), power front disc brakes and sports suspension. Inside, there was GT instrumentation and sports bucket seats. Outside, a rear window louvre, 12-slot steel wheels and radial tyres were fitted.
Of three available paint options – Yellow Fire with Walnut Glow, Lime Glaze with Jewel Green, and Polar White with Cosmic Blue – each featured bold ‘302’ decals on the front guards, with a small Superbird decal on the rear quarters.
Ford had stated that only 750 examples of the Superbird would be built, but it’s speculated they never reached that total, making survivors a rare thing.

Restored to Shine
This genuine XA Superbird was fully restored in 2010, and has been displayed and maintained by enthusiast owners since. It features the correct Y Code 302 V8 and an automatic transmission. Some refurbished original features remain, and the factory Superfringe radio works – a rare thing!
Arguably one of the best examples available today, this ‘Bird could land in your garage, thanks to Classics Retro Rewards.
