In terms of limited-edition Falcon hardtops, there’s the XC Cobra and XB John Goss Special, but the XA Falcon Superbird is the daddy of them all. Rare when new, a Superbird is very hard to find now. But thanks to Classics Retro Rewards, one of these classic birds could be roosting in your garage!
First Flight
Back in 1973, Ford Australia unveiled a one-off XA Falcon GT-based hardtop at the Melbourne Motor Show. Dubbed the ‘Superbird’ and defined by metallic silver paint and a huge bird decal that covered the sides from nose to tail, the concept was a hit. Ford hen put it into limited production - in a subtler, more saleable form – offering the look and feel of a GT without the GT price tag.
Small Flock
Powered by a 302 Cleveland V8 and four-speed manual (with a three-speed auto optional), Superbird spec also included power front disc brakes and sports suspension. A rear window louvre, 12-slot steel wheels, radial tyres, GT instrumentation and sports bucket seats were also standard.
Ford committed to build only 750 examples of the Superbird, but it’s speculated they never reached that total, making them rare then and even rarer now.
Fresh Feathers
The XA Superbird to be given away by Classics Retro Rewards was fully restored in 2010 and has been carefully preserved since. Finished in Polar White with Cosmic Blue (one of three Superbird colour combos available), this car features a genuine Y Code 302 V8 and C4 automatic, plus plenty of original and authentic parts. White vinyl interior trim, factory carpets and a working Superfringe radio is also on the spec list.
