Classics will be part of the action at September's Rally Australia
Always a hit with fans, the classics will be competing on selected Special Stages of the actual WRC course, as well as the always popular and spectator-friendly Super Special Stages. The field of classic and pre-1986 invitational vehicles will include Escorts, Datsuns, Mazdas, Toyotas and more, running on the mix of gravel and tarmac stages that make up this year's Rally Australia course.
Kicking off on Friday, the classics will run through the Shiplands, Ulong and Brooklana stages. Saturday will see the classics take on Grace, Urunga, Valla and Welshes stages around Bowraville and Nambucca Heads. On Sunday, the field heads north of Coffs Harbour for the Bucca, Clarence and Plum Pudding stages. Each stage will be run twice. All competitors will also run the Super Special Stage, situated in the Coffs Harbour jetty precinct, each night.
The final entry list for the Coffs Coast Classic Rally has yet to be confirmed, but you can expect the Classic will include Stewart Reid & Iain Stewart, who dominated May's IROQ round of the Australian Rally Championship in their Ford Escort. Keith Fackrell and Peter Stanford, who ran a similar-spec Escort RS1800 at the IROQ, are also expected to be in the mix come September.
Classic rallying fans will no doubt be hoping the likes of Ross Dunkerton, Richard Galley, Paul Darrouzet in the Capri Perana and Dave Thompson in the mighty XY GT Falcon will line up, too. No matter who the field comprises, the Coffs Coast Classic Rally will be a piece of this year's Rally Australia that should not be missed!
Rally Australia is Round 10 of the 2011 World Rally Championship. The event runs from September 8 to 11, in and around the Coffs Harbour area of NSW.
