Coulthard announced as AMG brand ambassador
The role will see the 40 year-old Scot involved in customer and press events, while also supporting the AMG development team in their test driving activities. Coulthard is currently involved in the marketing campaign for the new Mercedes-Benz E 63 AMG.
"We are very pleased to welcome David Coulthard as a new member of the AMG family," said Ola Källenius, Chairman of Mercedes-AMG GmbH on the new signing.
"As an active DTM driver and Formula 1 driver of many years standing, David Coulthard has very extensive know-how which makes him a very knowledgeable partner for our engineers when configuring new AMG high-performance models."
Coulthard was equally enthusiastic about the new appointment.
"I have been a member of the Mercedes-Benz family since 1996, and now I am also joining AMG as an exciting high-performance brand. This is without doubt the perfect complement to my job as a DTM driver, where I already drive an AMG C-Class of course."
The first tangible result of the cooperation between Coulthard and AMG is the marketing campaign for the new E 63 AMG. Due to go on sale in the northern hemisphere shortly, the 2012 E 63 AMG features a 5.5lt twin turbo V8 (from the CLS 63 AMG) with a fuel consumption of only 9.8 litres per 100 kms, while still developing up to 410 kW (557 hp) with an optional AMG Performance Package. Along with new steering and a revised 7-speed transmission, the new E 63 AMG is being promoted as the most efficient car in its class, but is still capable of 0-100 kph sprints under 4.5 seconds and an electronically-limited top speed of just under 300 kph.
Coulthard joined the DTM in 2010, driving for the Mucke Motorsport team in a 2008-spec Mercedes C-Class. He races against former F1 compatriot Ralf Schumacher in the series. The best result for the Scot to date has been an eighth place finish.
