Holden launches ‘Project Monaro’ competition

The Monaro, a 2004-model CV8 with a 5.7 V8, auto trans and over 200,000kms on the clock, will be restored and upgraded using Holden Genuine, AC Delco and Chevrolet Performance Parts.

Ambassador for the project is Holden racing legend, Craig Lowndes. The three-time V8 Supercars series champion and seven-time Bathurst 1000 winner will present a series of mini-documentaries on the build. From the initial concept, to body, interior and mechanical restoration, Lowndes will take enthusiasts behind the scenes as Project Monaro takes shape and will be behind the wheel to test the coupe at Holden’s Lang Lang Proving Ground once it’s completed.

“Like many Australians. I grew up with the Monaro,” Lowndes said. “It’s such a thrill to be working on such a special project with the team at Holden.”

That team includes some of the original V2 Monaro designers from Holden’s Port Melbourne Design team, while Holden engineers will be assisted by technicians from the Red Bull Holden Racing Team and other project partners.

The engineering team will also aim to improve Project Monaro’s performance over a stock example by fitting performance suspension and upgraded braking componentry, as well as fitting a remanufactured auto transmission and fully rebuilt LS1 V8.

Making the Project Monaro unique will be a custom front splitter, bonnet scoops and rear spoiler, as well as a one-off PPG paint scheme dubbed ‘Panorama Blue Suede’. Custom 19-inch wheels, Bridgestone performance tyres and an all-new custom leather interior will also be fitted.

The competition opened in July and runs to 31 March, 2020.
