Holden previews next-gen Commodore Supercar

The rendering, produced by GM Design Australia Exterior Design Manager Peter Hughes, is part of a development campaign for competition versions of the next-generation Commodore that, according to Holden, includes advanced simulation and aerodynamic evaluation using sophisticated computer modelling.

While the next generation Commodore will not be offered with a V8 engine in roadgoing form, Holden has revealed that the imported model will be homologated to run with a V8 for the 2018 season only, after which racing Commodores will be required to run tuned versions of the road car’s turbo V6.  Holden added that an engine suitable for the upcoming Supercars Gen 2 regulations is under development with GM in the US.

Triple Eight Race Engineering, the premier race outfit to run Commodores here, is working with Holden on this also, and will seek permission to run a V6 Commodore Supercar at selected race rounds next season, ahead of full implementation for 2019.

Holden believes the staggered introduction of body then engine will ensure an easier transition for those teams who choose to stick with the Commodore after 2017.

Holden and Triple Eight say they will work with Supercars’ technical department on development of the upcoming twin-turbo V6 engine to ensure parity with existing naturally-aspirated V8s from other manufacturers.

With engine development already underway, aerodynamic development of the next gen Commodore racer is due to commence in Q4, 2017.
