Hot 'Stangs in Shannons Melbourne Autumn Classic auction
The hottest of the 'hot lots' is undoubtedly the 1968 Shelby Mustang GT 500 KR. Listed as one of the last GT 500 KRs built for '68, this Candy Apple Red LHD fastback comes with a build sheet, Deluxe Marti Report and Shelby Identification Report to prove its provenance.
Build # 04447, fitted with a 428ci Cobra Jet V8 and optional C6 automatic transmission, was originally shipped to Alabama, with other as-delivered features including a fold-down rear seat, tilt steering column, power steering and 10-spoke Shelby alloy wheels.
Imported to Australia, this red over black Shelby has been in the current owner's possession for three years, featuring at two Mustang Nationals, including 2013, where it was a trophy winner.
Currently on SA club plates, the Shelby GT 500 KR will be sold unregistered, with Shannons setting a pre-sale estimate of $150,000 - $165,000 for this highly-desirable muscle car.
The second Mustang is a little more sedate, but no less appealing. The '66 Mustang GT convertible is also finished in red, but this one comes with white vinyl upholstery and a white folding top.
Fitted with a 289 V8 and 3-speed auto, this restored GT presents very well, and has been fitted with the 'Pony' interior. Purchased from a Shannons auction in 2005, the car was described then as one of the best Mustang GTs going around, with power roof, power steering and styled steel wheels.
Professionally converted to RHD and fitted with an engine immobiliser, the Mustang has been used sparingly by the current owner, covering approximately 200 miles a year. Guiding range for this car is $45,000 - $55,000.
Other Ford lots of interest for this auction include a customised 1951 'twin spinner' sedan, '47 Deluxe ute, '65 Galaxie ex-ambulance, '55 Victoria 2-door hardtop and a trio of Fairlanes.
Shannons Melbourne Autumn Classic Auction takes place at Shannons Melbourne auction rooms, 321 Warrigal Road, Cheltenham, on Monday, May 5, with the first lot crossing the blocks at 7:00PM.
