Mazda MX-5 Special Edition a rare roadster
In the showrooms from this month, only 200 units of the rare MX-5 Special Edition are available on our shores, with styling and suspension upgrades geared to tempt enthusiasts.
Regarded internationally as one of the top handling sports cars, the MX-5 is a proven chart-topper, securing its place as the best-selling 2-seater roadster of all time and remaining the longest enduring nameplate for Mazda globally.
First generation MX-5 production commenced in April 1989 and was certified by Guinness World Records as the world's best selling two-seat sports car when production reached 531,890 units in May 2000. Guinness updated the record when production passed 700,000 and later, 800,000 units. Currently, Mazda is reapplying to have the record updated to 900,000 units and is enthusiastically heading towards the million-unit mark.
The roadster's long lineage in combination with the unique features and strictly limited numbers of the MX-5 Special Edition ensures the niche offering will secure its place in Mazda history.
Coupled with customary MX-5 hot handling, the MX-5 Special Edition takes the fun to drive factor to even greater heights with the addition of Bilstein-tuned suspension.
A bright painted strut tower bar provides a stylish finish to the suspension set-up, and on the outside, the MX-5 Special Edition makes its mark with new bright painted 17-inch alloy wheels and a range of contemporary new exterior colours. Two new colours, Dolphin Grey Mica and Sparkling Black Mica, are available along with the ever-popular Aluminium Metallic.
Inside, the tone is set by unique grey coloured leather seats which are complemented by a leather steering wheel and handbrake both featuring grey highlight stitching. Chrome meter rings and air vent bezels complete the look.
Mazda Australia marketing manager Alastair Doak said, "Offering a limited number of MX-5 Special Editions to Australian consumers will ensure it appeals to the enthusiasts out there who are seeking something a little different."
As well as the upgraded styling and suspension, the MX-5 Special Edition is specified with generous equipment, including air-conditioning, power windows, cruise control, front and side airbags and Dynamic Stability Control. The manufacturer's list price for the Mazda MX-5 Special Edition is $47,200.
