Rallycross Australia launched ahead of July competition debut
The launch (a re-launch in some eyes, as Rallycross was a popular motorsport category in the 1970s) saw a number of newer and classic rallying vehicles (the latter from the Historic Rally Association) take on the dedicated rallycross course which has been set up at Broadford, and will be used for the first of what's planned to be a multi-round series.
On hand to officially launch the series was CAMS CEO, Eugene Arocca, along with Motorcycling Victoria CEO Wayne Holdsworth, and other dignitaries.
Following the speeches and introductions, a number of vehicles got their first taste of the dedicated 1.8km course, which is still under construction, but was broadly laid out for the launch. The planned circuit criss-crosses the road-racing track at Broadford, using the natural terrain, but adding a number of special man-made features to spice up the action.
The course will be finalised in preparation for the first full meeting staged by Rallycross Australia on July 19. A second 2015 meeting has been scheduled for October 25, while there are plans to stage a six-meeting series in 2016.
The inaugural Rallycross Australia meeting will be limited to 80 competitors in cars currently qualifying for Australian Autocross or Rally events.
As previously, cars will compete four at a time over three laps of a course combining sealed and unsealed surfaces, jumps and water hazards.
