Right Royal Rolls to feature at Bonhams Motorclassica auction
This Phantom V, with bodywork by Mulliner Park Ward was one of a pair originally ordered by the Commonwealth Government of Australia in 1966. Almost 20 feet long, the Phantom V was large enough for the biggest dignitaries, yet was still capable of a 160kph top speed - not that it would ever need it! After the initial pair, a third Phantom V was ordered to the same style and spec.
Features on this Rolls include a blue identification light on the roof, hidden air conditioning in the boot, additional illumination to the rear compartment, wool rugs and footrest in the rear, cocktail cabinet with decanters and glasses, and electrically operated blinds on the rear quarter windows. The centre armrest features controls for the radio, air conditioning, heater and division. Other special features include the automatic aerial, speedo in MPH, high frequency horns, full Colonial kit, Dunlop tubeless tyres and UD8524/25 headlamps.
After serving in the Commonwealth Government fleet for 27 years, both Phantom Vs were put up for public tender in 1994, where the vehicle featured here was purchased by the vendor. In 2000 the car was loaned back to the Government for the Royal Visit of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Phillip.
Featured in numerous Rolls-Royce publications and with a well documented history, the Phantom V offered has been billed as one of the most significant examples of the Crewe marque to be offered on the open market in recent years and is the only example of the Phantom Vs ordered by the Government still in private hands. The vehicle comes with comprehensive documentation, including copies of the original order form, test and engine build cards, both the Continental kit and tool kit are substantially complete. Registered on club plates in Victoria, the car has been routinely maintained and regularly exercised by the current owner. Bonhams estimate this Rolls-Royce Phantom V will sell for $400,00 - 450,000.
Bonhams' 'Collectors Motor Cars, Motorcycles, Automobilia & Number Plates' auction is being held on Sunday, October 23, in conjunction with Motorclassica at the Royal Exhibition Building, Melbourne.
