Sunbeam shines at Shannons Melbourne Spring auction
The top seller was a restored 1924 Sunbeam 24/70hp Tourer, which was being offered after more than a decade in dry storage. With Shannons' online bidding option opening these auctions up to overseas buyers, the winning bid of $111,000 saw the rare Sunbeam sell to a UK enthusiast.
The next-best seller was a fully-restored 1966 Volkswagen Kombi camper that, like the Sunbeam, was the subject of a vigorous online and floor bidding duel, before selling to an online bidder in South Australia for $74,000. The Kombi was the desirable 'T1' split screen model, in outstanding condition and with a rare 'E-Z Camper' fitout.
With the Bathurst 1000 just around the corner, the Melbourne auction saw Aussie muscle sell well, too, with a '75 Ford 'John Goss Special' XB Falcon hardtop and '72 Holden HQ Monaro coupe selling for $48,000 each.
Other sales of interest from this auction included $62,000 for a 1949 Rolls-Royce Silver Wraith limousine, $67,000 for an Aussie-built Elfin MS8 Clubman V8 roadster, $29,000 for a rare 1963 Morris Mini Traveller van, and $51,000 for a 1967 Series 1 E-Type Jaguar 2+2.
