Supercars enduro returns to Sandown in 2023
After three years without a 500km event, Sandown Raceway will finally host an enduro this year, with the Penrite Oil Sandown 500 returning to the 2023 Repco Supercars Championship calendar as the lead-in event for the Bathurst 1000.
Sandown only hosted sprint rounds in 2022 and 2021, and missed out on a round altogether in 2020, so the return of a 161-lap, 500km enduro to the suburban Victorian circuit will be welcomed by Supercars fans. It’ll also be the first enduro held in the new Gen3 Camaro vs Mustang era.
In addition to the Supercars, the Penrite Oil Sandown 500 will feature a packed support programme that includes the Dunlop Super2 and Dunlop Super3 Series, Porsche Paynter Dixon Carrera Cup Australia, Toyota Gazoo Racing Australia 86 Series, and Haltech V8 SuperUtes.
Tickets for the Penrite Oil Sandown 500 went on sale on 15 March.
"We're thrilled to announce that tickets for the Penrite Oil Sandown 500 are on sale," said Mark Pejic, Supercars’ Chief Strategy & Revenue Officer. "Bringing back the Sandown 500 has been extremely well-received among our fans, drivers and teams.
“This year’s race will be one of the most exciting events of the year as the first enduro in the new Gen3 Supercars, and we can't wait to welcome fans back to Sandown Raceway for another unforgettable weekend of racing."
Co-drivers confirmed for this year’s Sandown 500 include Garth Tander, who will make his debut with Penrite Racing in a Ford after 25 years of competing in a Holden, while his place alongside Shane van Gisbergen at Red Bull Ampol Racing will be taken by Richie Stanaway. Both Tander and Stanaway are past winners at the Sandown 500.
Chaz Mostert and Lee Holdsworth, who won Bathurst together in 2021, will reunite in a Walkinshaw Mustang and are expected to be one of Ford’s best hopes, while Cam Waters and James Moffat will also fly the Blue Oval flag at Sandown with Tickford Racing.
Tickets for the 2023 Penrite Oil Sandown 500 can be purchased via Ticketek. The event takes place 15-17 September.
