Supercars to farewell Holden at Adelaide 500
This weekend’s VALO Adelaide 500 will not only mark the finale for the 2022 Repco Supercars Championship, but also the last official appearance of a Holden on the Supercars grid, with fans invited to the round at the Adelaide Street Circuit to farewell Holden in style.
Fittingly, the final Supercars race for a Holden will be in the same state where the name was founded in 1856 and where the last Australian-made car to wear a Holden badge was built in 2017.
In 2023, the ZB Holden Commodore will be replaced by the Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 under the Supercars Gen3 Car of the Future programme, with the Camaro and a renewed Mustang rival to race against each other for the first time at Newcastle in March.
To send off the famous Aussie brand, there will be activities and displays across the race weekend at the VALO Adelaide 500, including a ‘Holden Tribute Cruise’ on the morning of Saturday, 3 December, from Elizabeth, site of the former GM-H manufacturing plant, through the Adelaide CBD to the Victoria Parklands Adelaide Street Circuit for a display at Park 14 (between Rundle Rd and Bartels Rd).
Open to any Holden owner with a ticket to the VALO Adelaide 500, the Holden Tribute Cruise is expected to attract several hundred vehicles – possibly the biggest all-Holden cruise ever.
Additionally, all four days of the VALO Adelaide 500 (1 – 4 December) will feature a curated display near Gate 1 at the Victoria Parklands circuit, showcasing 33 special and significant Holdens – old and new - from the brand’s long Australian history.
Craig Lowndes, who was behind the wheel of a Holden for 16 of his 25 years as a full-time ATCC/Supercars driver, won all three of his championships and four of his seven Bathurst victories in a Holden, will lead the Holden Tribute Cruise on 3 December and will also drive a lap of the Victoria Parklands Adelaide Street Circuit in an historic Holden, joined by SA Premier Steve Malinauskas.
With this year’s championship already wrapped up, Red Bull Ampol Racing’s Shane van Gisbergen will be aiming to send Holden out on a high at its last ever race round, after delivering the brand their final Bathurst 1000 victory and final Drivers’ Championship back in October.
Tickets for the VALO Adelaide 500 this 1 – 4 December are available through Supercars and Ticketek.
