Targa Aust adds new Mt. Buller event
Created by Targa Aus, in conjunction with Mt. Buller & Mt. Stirling Resort Management Board and CAMS, Targa Experience Mt. Buller is essentially a "training program" with a competitive element, to assist both novice and experienced targa competitors in meeting the increasingly professional driving standards that the likes of Targa Tasmania demand of competitors nowadays
Held from Saturday, October 31 to Sunday, November 1 (just prior to the annual Targa High Country), Targa Experience Mt. Buller is described by Targa Australia director Mark Perry as a new concept that will offer all Targa competitors the opportunity to get the most out of their chosen sport and enable them to compete more safely in the years ahead.
"Circuit racing has had a training program in place for many years and Targa rallying needs a similar structure to better prepare our competitors for what is one of the hardest forms of motor sport in the world today," Perry said.
"Targa has grown over 25 years to see literally thousands of people now competing in this style of motorsport each year. The Targa Experience Mt. Buller will ensure increasing requirements are met and that competitors will enjoy Targa even more than they do now."
But Perry says the event isn't just a classroom session; it will provide real world competitive experience with the running of a 7.5km Targa stage on the final climb to the Village on top of Mt. Buller.
"This section of road is the windiest and steepest section of the famous Mt. Buller Targa stage that will give a genuine Targa experience to all new competitors who attend the event.
"With the provision of both a university campus lecture theatre and a world-class Targa stage, Mt. Buller is clearly the perfect home for the Targa Experience," Perry concluded.
Mt. Buller & Mt. Stirling Resort Management Board CEO, John Huber agrees.
"Mt. Buller has a fantastic heritage and connection to Targa style rallying and is home to the country's second largest tarmac rally, so it made perfect sense to us to offer our world class teaching facilities, along with our fantastic road, to host the Targa Experience Mt. Buller and assist in ensuring that Targa has a long and successful future," Huber said.
The event has also received CAMS endorsement, which will mean that on successful completion of the two-day course, all attendees will receive a newly introduced CAMS Targa Rally Endorsement in their licence, which will give them instant approval to compete in any CAMS sanctioned and permitted targa rally in the future.
The Targa Experience Mt. Buller will be an annual event held the weekend before Targa High Country. It will help to ensure that Targa continues to prosper long into the future by providing better trained and skilled competitors.
