The Freak Show Festival of Motorcycles
THE MOST FUN YOU CAN HAVE WITH YOUR LEATHER ON!
The Freak Show Festival of Motorcycles aims to stage three days of motorcycling fun and frivolity, in the New England High Country town of Walcha, just south of Armidale.
The major features of the Festival will be a dirt hill climb, a flat-track, and customs. Other events featuring within the Festival include a trade show; Globe-of-Death and other unusual fairground amusements; stoppies, wheelies, donuts & burnouts; a ride-in cinema, live music, DJs, quality food & drink and more.
Customs will be a major focus. Unlike many show-and-shines, the Freak Show Festival of Motorcycles will have just two categories — one for Frankenstein bikes (motorcycles brought to life using the donor parts of at least two other different makes of motorcycle and/or other vehicles).
The other category will be open to all comers. Entry in the customs is free and both categories will be judged by popular vote.
The Festival is expecting between 3500-5000 weekend pass holders to attend, many of these glamping or camping at the Festival, so the customs can expect plenty of lingering interest.
Some of the country’s top custom shops are bringing iron to the show.
Walcha sits astride two of the best road rides in Australia: Thunderbolts Way north of Gloucester and the famed Oxley Highway west of Wauchope, so the motorcycling fun begins long before you arrive at the Festival.
Festival organiser David Rollins explains, “We wanted to create a rider’s festival that’s all about the love of motorcycles. That’s why pretty much everything at the Festival will be motorcycle-themed. It might seem a little oddball at times, a little off beat and freaky, but that’s motorcyclists generally speaking, right? At least, that’s how we’re perceived by non-motorcyclists.
“So what people can expect when they come to the Festival is a little bit Summernats, a little bit Sturgis, and a little bit The Burning Man. If you can’t quite get your head around that, all the more reason to come.”
