Toyota preview 10th Anniversary Edition GR86
Following the launch of the all-new GR86 update of the 86 that’s due in Australia this September, Toyota will mark the 10th birthday of their popular rear-wheel drive sports coupe with the release of a special ‘GR86 10th Anniversary Edition’ before the end of 2022.
Joining the Yaris and Supra in Toyota’s locally-available GR (Gazoo Racing) range, the new GR86 will feature a larger, 2.4-litre flat four engine, refined chassis and more safety tech that defines the second-generation 86 (and its Subaru BRZ sibling), as well as what Toyota says are optimised handling characteristics and a driver-focussed cockpit.
In the ten years since the 86 has been on the Australian market, almost 22,000 units have been sold and it was regularly the top-selling sports car in the country before the arrival of the factory RHD Ford Mustang in 2016.
The 10th Anniversary Edition will be unchanged mechanically from the regular GR86, but will feature special orange paint in the style of Velocity Orange that was the original 86’s hero colour a decade ago. This is complemented with a two-tone black and orange interior that includes ‘10th Anniversary’ identification embroidered into the driver and passenger door trims.
"Ten years ago, we launched the original Toyota 86 in Australia, creating a following for those wanting a sports car that blends reliable performance and great value," said Toyota Australia Vice President Sales, Marketing and Franchise Operations Sean Hanley.
"With the new generation GR86 just around the corner, what better way to commemorate a decade of our exciting coupe than with this special 10th Anniversary model."
Only 86 units of the 10th Anniversary Edition will be released in Australia, with local members of the Gazoo Racing Club given priority access for ordering. To join the Gazoo Racing Club, go to: www.toyota.com.au/gazoo-racing/club
No pricing had been announced for either the GR86 or GR86 10th Anniversary Edition at time of writing, but the standard GR86 is expected to start at around $35,000 when it arrives here in September as a 2023 model.
Toyota Australia will release further details on the 10th Anniversary Edition at the GR86 launch this September.
