Victoria's 'Day of the Volkswagen' celebrates 30 years in 2011
Over the years, the DOVW has become a staple event for VW fans around the State, attracting hundreds of vehicles across the gamut of VW production, from early Beetles to the latest Golfs, Transporters and more.
The event has attracted VW luminaries, such as Bruce Meyers (of VW-powered Meyers Manx buggy fame) and showcased some rare and unique Volkswagen models, like the 1939 Hanomag KDF, a 1943 Schwimmwagen, 1957 Kombi Fire Engine (that remained in service in a small town in Switzerland until the late 90s), and one of the 3,000 final edition 2004 1600 Beetles from the Mexico production facility that continued to run the flat front windscreen that early Beetles are famous for, to name just a few. The '39 Hanomag KDF was a variant of the original Beetle that was developed as a prototype for future production models offering a longer, wider and taller vehicle. The example in Australia was found in East Germany after the fall of the Berlin Wall.
At recent DOVWs, special milestones for the Kombi (60 years) and the Golf in Australia (35 years) featured cavalcades of models representing each year of production, with both these events broadcast nationally on Fletch's 'Classic Restos' TV program.
As in past years, the 30th Anniversary DOVW will feature a comprehensive show & shine, swap meet and trade displays. This year, live music will be provided by the 'Total Fire Band' and the kids activities on-site at Yarra Glen will be augmented by free face-painting, VW plaster mould painting and a Scalextric track, so there will be plenty to keep the kids happy. Mobile food and coffee vans will also be on site to keep you refreshed while you check out all that the day has to offer.
Major sponsor for the day, Volkswagen Group Australia, will have a selection of VW's latest models on display, plus representatives from the 2010 Volkswagen Dealer of the Year on hand to answer any questions on the new vehicles.
A special series of show & shine trophies have been struck for the anniversary event, and this year's show will also feature a special display of trophies awarded over the past three decades.
This year's Day of the Volkswagen is scheduled for Sunday, November 6, at the Yarra Glen racecourse. Gates open at 8:00am for traders and swappers and 9:00am for public. Entry costs for judged cars for the day's show & shine start at $20 (incentives offered for VW club members who pre-register - contact the club for further details). Public entry on the day is $10 for adults, with kids under 12 free.
