Vintage models top Shannons Melbourne Auction
Bidding started at $240,000 for the Australian-delivered car and came down to a duel between two local enthusiasts beyond $300,000 to eventually finish comfortably above its pre-auction high estimate of $320,000.
Also selling in the six-figure range was a 1935 Hispano-Suiza K6 Vanvooren-bodied limousine, which despite its mostly unrestored condition, still presented very well. In a battle between two phone bidders, this rare vehicle soon went well above its high estimate of $80,000 to sell for $120,000.
The good news for local enthusiasts is that both this car and the Rolls are staying in Australia after selling to local collectors.
Also in the Vintage/Pre-War arena, a restored 1929 Stutz Blackhawk coupe sold for $52,000, while a striking 1936 Auburn sedan in RHD made $46,500.
Ford Model Ts and As were also keenly pursued, with a 1930 Model A roadster selling for $27,000, a 1928 Model A tourer bringing $17,000, and a 1928 Model A roadster in 'Project' condition selling with no reserve for $5,500. A 1923 Model T roadster made $16,000, but the 1912 T tourer which was arguably the star of this Ford group was passed in.
Clearance rate from this action was 89 percent, with $1.8 million in total sales.
