VW announces 'Wolfsburg Edition' Golf R for Australia
Specially trimmed and finished, each Wolfsburg Edition Golf R revives a classic badge from VW's earliest days as a vehicle manufacturer: the Wolfsburg 'wolf and castle' city crest badge in the style of those that graced the first post-War Volkswagen Beetles.
VW says the Golf R and Golf R Wagon Wolfsburg Edition cars are a tribute to the ancestral roots of the Volkswagen brand. The Wolfsburg name comes from the castle that first graced the region. After WWII, the town itself was renamed to this as well, from the 'KdF Stadt' (Strength through Joy town) name it wore during the Nazi era when the factory was built. The Beetle was also originally called the KdF wagen under the Nazi regime - the 'Volkswagen' name came later.
Both hatch and wagon variants offer higher specification over the standard Golf R hatch, with a number of key distinguishing features.
Key spec highlights include:
_Choice of three exterior colours including the exclusive Oryx White Pearl
_Carbon Nappa leather appointed upholstery with individually heated front seats
_Black Pretoria 19-inch alloy wheels (4)
_Black door mirror covers
_Black roof rails (wagon only)
_Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC)
_Front Assist with City Emergency Brake (City EB)
_Proactive occupant protection system
_Blind Spot Monitor with rear traffic alert
_Wolfsburg crest badge
The comprehensive equipment package adds a retail price premium of $1,750 to the Golf R, for a recommended retail price of $56,990. At $58,990, the Golf R Wagon Wolfsburg Edition carries a $2,000 premium. The Golf R Wagon Wolfsburg Edition is also a future collectable, as it's exclusive to Australia and the only way you can get an R-spec Golf wagon locally.
Both limited-run models feature the Golf R's 206kW TSI engine and 4Motion all-wheel-drive as standard. The only option available is a panoramic electric glass sunroof, at $1,850RRP.
