Weeks triumphs at Classic Targa Adelaide

Weeks won the Shannons Classic Outright competition, for pre-1986 cars, by over three minutes from Matt Selley. More impressively, Weeks was also the fastest across the entire field, beating home all comers, including later model Nissan Skyline GT-Rs, to win the Supaloc Overall title. Weeks and former Targa Tasmania champ, Tony Quinn had a mighty tussle across the three days. Quinn's drive ended sadly, however, when he blew his Nissan Skyline GT-R's engine on the final stage when second place was clearly his.

Even when the race organiserstried to slow Weeks with a handicap, they couldn't stop the feisty 61 year-old from recording an emphatic victory. The former Classic Adelaide winner, with co-driver Toni Feaver, was not really headed at any time across the three days of competition.

Fellow South Australian, Matt Selley, drove a clean rally in his Porsche 911, but could not match the pace of Weeks finishing three minutes, 17 seconds in arrears, claiming second place in both Classic Outright and Supaloc Overall categories. West Australian Tolley Challis, in another 1974 Porsche 911, finished third, 16 seconds further back after having troubles with his pace notes on the final day.

"That was the toughest rally we've ever done in a classic car," Weeks said at the finish at the Intercontinental Hotel.

"The intensity of the battle with (Tony) Quinn and trying to keep up with his Nissan was incredible, and fortunately our car stayed together.

"It says a lot about the car. A lot of the stages really suited the car, but others didn't. We certainly pushed to the limit and we had nothing left. The only thing to top this event in terms of toughness is Targa Tasmania."

The Early Classic Handicap competition, reserved for cars built before 1966, was won by Adelaide fashion industry entrepreneur, Michael Lamprell, in his pulsating 1964 Ford Mustang.

In the other titles on offer, South Australian Tim Possingham was gifted victory in the Contemporary Classic competition after Quinn's engine failure, while there was a tie in the Regularity trophy between Peter Mayer in his Porsche Cayman S, and the Mitsubishi Lancer Evo X of John Amos.
