Seller's Description
The Series One was a light utility with four-wheel-drive to deliver rough-terrain ability that no other light commercial had. The Land Rover concept was inspired by the World War 2 Willys Jeep. Maurice Wilks of Rover had one shipped to his Anglesey farm as a work vehicle, and decided that the idea was so good Rover should market a civilian equivalent targeted at farmers like himself. The die was cast, and the first Land Rover prototype produced. Its central driving position didn’t last, but the majority of its formula remained unmodified until the 1980s. ABOUT THIS CAR Chassis: 16161211 - this is the Purist's pick - the 80`` wheelbase and 1600cc engine - Matching Numbers Car, which is rare, as most were swapped out with a Holden engine. LOW MILEAGE Four Long Term Owners from new (20 years, 16years, 21 years and 12 years) The important aspect of this Landrover is that it was built over the Christmas holiday in the UK, started in December 1950, completed in January 1951 to be sold during that year as one of nine original NZ army cars, now with a decent following. We understand that the army history even got someone to write a book about the first 9 cars but we are not sure when this is due out. The panels are Birmabright aluminium alloy with galvanised steel cappings to stiffen and hold them together; the bulkhead and door frames are also steel. Sound bulkhead. No Rust. Full rust proofing carried out. Interior - don’t expect sophistication here but all in very good order. Distributor swapped for a later one. The original one is available with car. Been fitted with a Battery isolator/ security device just behind the near side headlight. Engine refreshed with new shells ,rings, oil pump etc by Engine Reconditioning Services and John Finlay Motors in Canterbury. Mileage tallies with the cars history. You get character with a Land-Rover – bags of it. They are great fun to drive, will go where ordinary cars simply won’t go, and are strangely addictive. A Series I Land-Rover is not like any other classic car you’ll buy, and you really will get to love its faults. It can actually be useful, too. NOTE: Personalised plates DON'T come with car. Think 4×4, and you automatically think Land Rover. The best of British has been with us for 73 years now, and with the launch of Land Rover’s new Defender – there has been an upsurge in interest for all models of the traditional Land Rover line. Its go-anywhere nature makes the Series 1 a truly versatile classic, and its ability to be hosed down makes it one which you shouldn’t be scared of using regardless of the weather or the season. This example, would arguably be one of the best examples in NZ. TRANSPORT / SHIPPING CAN BE ORGANISED ON THIS VEHICLE ON BUYER'S BEHALF AT BUYERS COST. Viewing is BY APPOINTMENT only. NOTE: Since the beginning of 2003, Australia is exercising a total ban on asbestos, including classic and vintage cars, and any other car manufactured prior to the year 2000. It is within the importers responsibility to ensure that any cars reaching Australia are certified asbestos free prior to entering the country – failure to do so can result in hefty penalties and unnecessary delays at the border. Therefore, at Waimak Classic Cars, we are now offering the service of asbestos free certification, which includes detection and testing, replacement of contaminated asbestos parts and final certification.
