Seller's Description
The Austin-Healey 3000 was BMC's sporting flagship for almost a decade, and many detail changes were made along the way.
The 3000 name was first used in 1959 when the C-Series engine from the 100/6 was upgraded to 2.9-litres (and a nominal for marketing 3-litres), for use in the uprated Farina bodied Westminsters.
The 3000 boasted more power, an improved gearbox and disc brakes on the front. The best was saved till last though, with the Austin-Healey Mk3, launched in 1964. Although the looks remained largely the same this was the most powerful Austin-Healey with 148bhp for a maximum speed of 121mph.
By 1965, the Mk III had matured into a far more sophisticated offering than its earlier siblings. The addition of a more powerful 2.9-litre inline-six, improved braking, and a redesigned interior transformed the Healey into a true dual-purpose car, equally at home carving through winding country roads or cruising long distances in comfort. The upgraded walnut veneer dash, wind-up windows, and improved weather protection signalled a shift toward luxury without diluting the car’s unmistakable sporting soul.
On the road, the experience is unmistakably analogue and deeply engaging. The long bonnet stretches ahead, the exhaust note is rich and purposeful, and the torque from the big six delivers effortless acceleration. Steering is direct, the chassis communicative, and every input from the driver is rewarded with a sense of connection that modern cars simply cannot replicate.
But beyond the mechanics, the appeal of the Mk III lies in its presence. It is a car that draws admiration without trying; timeless lines, low-slung stance, and that unmistakable British roadster charm.
