Model history
Launched at the Geneva Motor Show in 1961, the Jaguar E-Type stunned the motoring world with its sleek styling, 150mph performance and a price tag well below its exotic rivals. In 1964 the original 3.8 litre engine grew to 4.2 litres, bringing more torque, a fully synchromesh gearbox and more comfortable seating. The range was joined by the 2+2 in 1966, which rode on a longer wheelbase with a taller roofline and added rear seating, making the E-Type a more practical proposition for the enthusiast who wanted real touring comfort. Automatic transmission also became an option for the first time to suit the American market.
1968 saw the introduction of the Series 2 which introduced a number of refinements to the E-Type formula. The headlights lost their distinctive glass covers and moved forward, tail lights and indicators were enlarged to suit new safety regulations, and the bumpers and dash were redesigned. Under the bonnet, improved cooling helped the 4.2 litre six cope with hot-climate and traffic conditions, which suited Australian roads well.
The Series 3 arrived in 1971. Jaguar replaced the long-serving XK straight-six with its all-new 5.3 litre carburetted V12, delivering smooth, effortless power and around 272bhp. The longer wheelbase body was now shared by both the 2+2 and the roadster which also gained flared wheel arches, a wider track, larger cross-slat grille, ventilated front disc brakes and power steering as standard. The result was a more relaxed, refined E-Type built for long-distance touring.
Car history
This Series 3 E-Type 2+2 we have here presents in presentable condition all round being an obvious older restoration at some point. Body and paint work presents well with good lustre and no signs of corrosion. The interior presents well with recovered front seats in the original styled pattern. Carpets, dashboard and all other surfaces in good overall condition.
Recent work has included a tune up, new spark plugs, brake fluid change and refurbished suspension at the front. The Jag fires up to life nicely and idles smoothly as a V12 should. On the open road, is where these jags really perform at their best with great road holding, comforting ride and plenty of power under foot (even by todays standards).
This is a great opportunity to break into E-Type ownership without breaking the bank!
Sold unregistered with RWC (if sold in QLD) – “ETYPS3” plates sold separately
