Seller's Description
1983 LANCIA 037 STRADALE WITH GROUP B EVOLUTION 2 MODIFICATION.
One of only 200 examples made, with Group B Evolution 2 modifications, and fascinating period competition history, this 1983 Lancia 037 Stradale represents one of the most significant and desirable Italian homologation specials of its era.
Developed by Lancia, Abarth, and Pininfarina, the 037 was created specifically to satisfy the FIA's Group B homologation requirements. With its mid-mounted engine, rear-wheel drive, lightweight construction and Abarth-developed mechanicals, the 037 was designed specifically for rally competition.
The 037 was famously the last rear-wheel-drive car to win the World Rally Championship manufacturers' title in 1983, defeating rival four-wheel-drive vehicles including the Audi Quattro. The 1983 Worl Rally Championship inspired Race for Glory, a film depicting the rivalry between the 037 and the Audi Quattro and the 037’s victory.
This particular example has an especially interesting history.
In 1983, and carrying registration TIA 2700, the car, driven by brothers Ronnie and Dessie McCartney, competed in the International Circuit of Ireland Rally. The 037 was delivered new to the McCartney brothers, which commissioned its conversion from left hand drive to right hand drive prior to entering its first event at the International Circuit of Ireland Rally. The 037 had its first run in oil change at 1,000 kilometres during that Rally.
The Lancia subsequently made its way to Scotland, where it was sold to John Gray of Edinburgh and registered A505 SST. John Gray campaigned the 037 in Scottish hill climbing events during the mid-1980s, with contemporary motorsport records documenting his competition appearances with the car. John Gray took the trophy at the 1984 Scottish Hillclimb Championship. The car was prepared for competition by Andy Dawson, adding further significance to its period history.
In 1987, the 037 was acquired by racing legend Ludovic Lindsay. The car received its distinctive Martini Racing livery, with Evolution 2 upgrades including front and rear clips. Horsepower was increased by Mr. Lindsay’s modifications from 300 to 350 horsepower. The car's competition history also attracted period motoring press attention, appearing on the front cover of the Supercar Classics magazine in 1989.
Press coverage of the 037 continued beyond its Rally Championship, with Top Gear featuring the 037 among its great Group B cars, praising its Pininfarina styling and competition-bred character, while also selecting the 037 among its favourite Pininfarina designs.
Following its competition career in Britain, the 037 was acquired by another racing identity, Patrick Canavese. The 037 was delivered to Mr. Canavese in Marseille where it sat within a collection of other exotic and collectible Lancia vehicles.
The 037 was imported into Australia in 2005, where it was put to good use. It entered various Australian Rally Championship events across Australia. To name only a few, it competed in the Coffs Coast Rally Championship, the Speed on Tweed, the Bega Valley Motor Rally, the Alpine Rally in Victoria, the Volksmuller Rallysprint, and the Rally of the Bay. Outside rally competition, it participated annually in various motorsport events and exhibitions including Rally Retro, the Adelaide Motorsport Festival, and Auto Italia.
In 2019, the engine was rebuilt with Evolution 2 specification, which included an Evolution 2 supercharger, and Evolution 2 manifold.
In 2024, the 037 was acquired by its present custodian and kept within a larger collection of exotic vehicles.
What makes this example particularly appealing is the combination of its genuine Stradale identity, its historic racing history, the Evolution 2 modifications, and press coverage.
Powered by a mid-mounted 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine with Abarth Volumex supercharging, the Stradale originally produced approximately 205 bhp and drove through a five-speed manual transmission to the rear wheels. With its modifications, which include an Motec ECU, the 037 was increased to approximately 350 bhp.
An astute acquisition for the serious Lancia collector, historic competition enthusiast or discerning Italian automotive connoisseur. Truly irreplaceable, Worth every penny $1,399,990.
