This Australian-delivered 1994 Mercedes-Benz SL500 represents an appealing example of the celebrated R129-series roadster, combining timeless Bruno Sacco styling with a muscular 5.0-litre V8, luxurious black leather interior and the versatility of both a removable hardtop and electrically operated fabric soft top. Built in December 1994, the accompanying Mercedes-Benz Australia plate carries Commission No. 04/12971, confirming the car was delivered through the official Australian distributor.
Power comes from Mercedes-Benzs M119.972 engine, an all-alloy 4,973cc V8 incorporating four overhead camshafts, four valves per cylinder and electronic fuel injection. Producing approximately 235kW and 470Nm when new, the M119 delivers smooth, effortless acceleration and a great exhaust soundtrack with the refinement expected of Mercedes-Benzs flagship V8 roadster.
The V8 is paired with a four-speed automatic transmission, delivering power to the rear wheels in the traditional grand-touring configuration. Independent suspension at each corner, four-wheel disc brakes, anti-lock braking and ASR traction control gave the SL500 an impressive combination of ride comfort, handling stability and braking performance.
Introduced in 1989, the R129 represented a significant technological advance over the long-running R107 SL. Its rigid body structure, automatic pop-up rollover bar and comprehensive occupant-protection systems established new standards for open-top safety, while its clean proportions and restrained detailing reflected Mercedes-Benz design of philosophy of enduring elegance.
Externally, this SL500 is presented in beautiful Almandine Red Metallic, corresponding with Paint Code 512 recorded in its factory documentation. The deep metallic finish complements the R129s long bonnet, low beltline, pronounced wheelarches and neatly integrated bumpers.
The body and paint present attractively with various age related blemishes and stone chips on par with its age and usage. The overall appearance retaining the elegance and substantial construction for which the R129 has become renowned.
A removable hardtop transforms the SL500 into a refined sporting coupe, while the electrically operated black fabric soft top provides the enjoyment of open-air motoring ( operation untested). Factory 16-inch eight-hole Mercedes-Benz alloy wheels complete its distinctive period appearance.
Inside, the cabin is trimmed in black leather, identified by Trim Code 271, and complemented by extensive burr-walnut veneer. The electrically adjustable front seats incorporate memory functions, while further appointments include automatic climate control, cruise control, power windows, power mirrors, SRS airbag protection and a wood-and-leather steering wheel and gear selector. Please note that the passenger seat is not responding to adjustment.
The black leather displays very well with expected creasing and use consistent with the vehicles age and indicated kilometres, while the cabin retains its original Mercedes-Benz character and presents as an inviting, driver-focused grand-touring environment. A Pioneer audio system has been installed as a later convenience upgrade.
Importantly, this SL500 is accompanied by its Mercedes-Benz book wallet, owner’s manual, Australian supplement, maintenance booklet, workshop directory and associated literature. The maintenance booklet is stamped with Mercedes-Benz Australia Stock No. 04/12971, matching the commission number displayed on the vehicles Australian identification plate.
The R129 SL500 has become increasingly recognised as one of Mercedes-Benzs defining modern classics. Built during an era renowned for engineering quality, the model combines naturally aspirated V8 performance, advanced safety technology and exceptional long-distance touring ability within one of Bruno Saccos most enduring designs.
Presented in Almandine Red Metallic with black leather, matching hardtop, electric soft top, factory alloy wheels, Australian-delivery identification and accompanying books, this 1994 Mercedes-Benz SL500 offers an appealing opportunity to secure a highly specified V8 example of the celebrated R129 roadster.
Offered from a deceased estate, this beautiful example was owned by a retired Mercedes mechanic who adored this car. A service was just completed by the family and a brand new AGM battery has been installed for this Auction sale.
