THE STORY Launched in 2004 for the 2005 model year, the Porsche 911 (997) Carrera S marked a triumphant evolution of the iconic 911 lineage. Under the rear deck lay a 3.8L flat-six engine, the largest and most potent naturally aspirated unit ever fitted to a base-range 911 at the time. Producing 261 kW (355 hp) and 400 Nm of torque, the engine was paired with either a crisp six-speed manual transmission or an optional five-speed Tiptronic S automatic. Porsche’s PASM adaptive suspension, paired with larger S-specific brakes and a standard limited-slip differential provided sharp and communicative handling, equally at home on a winding mountain pass as it was cruising the highway.
