2022 Historic Winton preview
Details for the 2022 version of Historic Winton, Australia’s longest-running and most popular all-historic motorsport spectacle, have been announced, with this year’s event scheduled for 28-29 May.
Presented by the Austin 7 Club in association with the Historic Motorcycle Racing Association of Victoria, Historic Winton is held at Winton Motor Raceway, near Benalla in country Victoria.
Across the two days, there will be more than 40 races for historic cars, motorcycles and sidecars across several categories, including Group J & K, Groups M & O, Group Lb Sports and Racing, Groups Q & R Sports and Racing, Formula Ford, Group N, Group S and Regularity, with similar diversity for the motorcycle classes.
This year's 45th Historic Winton reintroduces official heritage displays, so organisers are inviting spectators to bring their historic cars, trucks, buses, motorcycles, sidecar outfits and other vehicles.
Anniversaries to be marked this year include 120 years of Cadillac and Studebaker, 70 years of the Austin A30 and Austin-Healey 100, as well as 60-year anniversaries for the EH Holden, XL Falcon, Cortina, Morris 1100, Australian Valiant, AC Cobra, MGB, Lotus Elan and more.
Selected vehicles from the heritage display, including anniversary vehicles and other outstanding machines spotted in the car park, will be invited to take part in the traditional lunchtime parade of the Winton circuit on Sunday, 29 May.

Importantly, 2022 marks both 100 years of the Austin 7 and 50 years since the Austin 7 Club first started holding historic motorsport events at Winton, so there’s extra reason to celebrate.
“Prior to Historic Winton, the Club ran sprints and time trial events at the venue,” explained event organiser and President of the Austin 7 Club, Len Kerwood. “These lead to the bigger Historic Winton event being created, after competitors expressed a keen interest.
“Historic Winton has been renowned for a special camaraderie for decades, with many ongoing interstate friendships made at the track.”
There will be no Benalla Historic Vehicle Tour this year due to COVID-19 concerns, but self-guided tours, designed by the Benalla Rural City Council, will be available for enthusiasts to take up on Friday, 27 May (email: [email protected] for details).
Another key COVID-related change for this year’s 45th Historic Winton is that entry will only be granted upon presentation of proof of COVID vaccination or a valid exemption. This applies to competitors, spectators and anyone else entering the circuit.
