Aussie' Porsche auctioned in UK
The 2016 Bond Street sale, held on 4 December, was no exception, with everything from a 1914 Vauxhall to a 2015 Covette Z06 on the 29-vehicle consignment list, which also included a couple of classics with a specific Australian connection.
The first was an Australian-delivered 1963 Aston Martin DB5 which was withdrawn from sale prior to the auction.
The other "Aussie" car was a 1973 Porsche 911S 2.4 Targa - the last year for the slim-bumpered 2.4-engined 911s before the adoption of the 2.7 engine and larger impact-absorbing bumpers.
Like the Aston, this factory RHD car was Australian-delivered, one of only four to come here that year, and arrived in special order Light Ivory paint, with sports seats - and ski racks!
With its original owner until 1994, the second owner treated it to a thorough restoration, during which it was upgraded to 2.7-litre capacity. In 2004, Octane magazine editor Robert Coucher bought the car and had it shipped to the UK, where it was later fitted with a new fuel tank and replacement suspension components.
The 911S came to the New Bond Street sale with a £150,000 - £180,000 estimate, which proved to be a close approximation of its value, as the car sold for £147,100 (AU$249,678).
Top seller at the auction was a 1926 Rolls-Royce Phantom I, with a uniquely opulent interior fitout, that sold for £561,500 (AU$953,057).
