BMW marks M5's 30th Anniversary with special edition
Limited to just 300 examples worldwide, the BMW M5 "30 Jahre M5" (30 years of the M5) improves on the stock M5's performance, developing 441 kW (600 hp) and peak torque of 700 Nm (516 lb-ft) from the TwinPower turbocharged 4.4-litre V8, making it not only the most powerful BMW M5 ever, but also the most powerful car in the history of BMW M GmbH. BMW claim a 0-100 kph sprint time of 3.9 seconds for the special edition.
BMW Individual-inspired looks identify the new model, with numerous dynamics and comfort-enhancing equipment details adding to the special edition's collector status.
Extensive package of measures to further increase performance.
The 4.4-litre V8 in the "30 Jahre M5" pushes out 441kW, exceeding the standard model by 29kW. This power boost has been achieved through what BMW says are carefully calculated tweaks to the engine management and an increase in charge pressure.
The BMW Competition Package, designed to "enrich the handling characteristics of the BMW M5", is fitted as standard to the special edition, but can be ordered as an option for the regular M5.
Modifications that make up the Competition Package include a revised chassis set-up with firmer spring/damper tuning and a 10mm drop in ride height. Added to this, the Active M Differential on the final drive gains its own control unit to improve traction.
Steering comes with M-specific Servotronic function for more direct response, while the M Dynamic Mode of the DSC (Dynamic Stability Control) system is focused on delivering even sportier handling.

Appearance-wise, this special-edition has been given the 'BMW Individual' treatment, which includes the Frozen Dark Silver metallic paint, and black chrome treatment for the kidney grille surround, gills with "30 Jahre M5" badge on the front wing, door handle inserts and twin exhaust tailpipes. M light-alloy wheels are 20-inch 'bi-colour' (silver with black inserts) with mixed tyres (front: 265/35 ZR 20, rear: 295/30 ZR 20).
The interior features "30 Jahre M5" lettering on the front door sills, while a plaque bearing "30 Jahre M5" and an individually-numbered inscription, in reference to the special edition's 300-unit production run, is on the passenger side of the dash. The "30 Jahre M5" logo is also embroidered into the backrests of all four seats.
Driver and front passenger get M multifunction seats in black Alcantara/leather with a wide range of electrical adjustment, while Anthracite Alcantara trim is used for the M sports steering wheel, centre console and door panels.
In-car entertainment on the special edition includes a choice of Harman Kardon (600W) or Bang & Olufsen (1200W) high-end surround-sound systems with a total of 16 speakers.
UPDATE:
BMW Group Australia advised that 15 units of the BMW 30 Jahre M5 have been confirmed for Australia, with pricing to be confirmed closer to the release date. Given the M5 currently commands a $229,000 price in Australia, expect the special edition to be somewhere in the $240-250,000 range (excluding on road costs).
