Lakeside Classic Festival of Touring Cars, August 12-14
Two of the most popular vehicles from the Bowden collection will be attending, in the form of Allan Moffat's iconic 1969 Trans Am Boss Mustang and Norm Beechey's 1970 ATCC-winning HT GTS 350 Monaro. Joining them will be Ian 'Pete' Geoghegan's GTA Mustang that took the touring car crown three years running from 1967 to 1969. All three cars enjoyed some memorable battles at Lakeside over the years and the chance to see them together on track again - even if just for demonstration laps - will be a very special moment for enthusiasts.
The old warriors will be joined on track by an expected full 30-car grid of Group C and Group A cars, many of which have not been back to the circuit since they raced in the Australian Touring Car Championship in the 1970s and 80s. Expect to see some fierce rivalry between the Falcons, Commodores, BMWs, Mazda RX-7s, Ford Sierras and the giant-killing Nissan GTRs. Four-time Australian Touring Car Champion and multiple Lakeside winner Jim Richards will be there to meet and greet fans, and is expected to also drive demonstration laps in some of the famous touring cars from the past.
Spectators will be treated to a weekend of non-stop action with Group N (historic touring cars pre-1973), HQ Holdens, Geminis and the Australian Trans Am Championship joining the party as well. The Trans Am Championship is always a crowd favourite, now with a great mix of Camaros and Mustangs as well as a Mercury Comet, Ford Galaxie, Dodge Challenger and an AMC Javelin, the Australian Trans Am Championship is a fantastic tribute to the thrilling Trans Am series of the late '60s/early '70s.
As with the previous three 50th anniversary race meetings held this year, Lakeside Park has been given a special reprieve from its usual 95dba noise restriction for the Lakeside Classic Festival of Touring Cars, due to the significance of the anniversary. Such is the popularity of this event amongst fans and racers alike that a huge crowd of motor sport is expected this weekend.
This weekend's Lakeside Classic Festival of Touring Cars is the last of four 50th anniversary celebration events for Lakeside this year and is set to be an outstanding weekend for motoring fans, with a huge range of touring cars represented on-track and in trackside vehicle displays.
