Major milestones to be celebrated at Motorclassica 2016
A number of motoring milestones will be celebrated at Motorclassica this year, including 110 years of Rolls-Royce, 100 years of BMW, 130 years of Mercedes-Benz and 90 years of Ducati.
Also being celebrated under the domed roof of the Exhibition Building this year will be 90 years of Italian carrozzeria Touring Superleggera and 50 years since Mini dominated Bathurst in 1966.
Mercedes-Benz
On the Thursday evening, prior to the show opening to the public, Mercedes-Benz will launch its newest luxury model, which will share floor space with more than fifteen other rare and collectable Benz vehicles, including an 1896 Velocipede - the world's first production car - a multi-million dollar pre-War 540K, iconic 300SL and the highly desirable Ponton and Pagoda models from the modern era.
BMW
BMW's centenary display will feature a similarly desirable collection of past models, ranging from the beautiful art deco-inspired 326, 327 and 328, through to several rare models from the '80s and '90s. For race fans, a highlight will be Jim Richards's famous ATCC-winning JPS-sponsored BMW 635CSi Group A racers from 1985 and 1987.
Other Highlights
Most of the vehicles on display inside will be vying for the prestigious Motorclassica Concours trophies, with these awards for the 'best of the best' now highly coveted among the collector car community.
In addition to the cars and bikes on show inside, there'll be hundreds more outside each day, pooled from motoring clubs across Victoria, as part of the 'Club Sandwich' display sponsored by Lorbek Luxury Cars.
Motorclassica 2016 kicks off, as usual, with the 'Tour Classica' run through Melbourne's CBD to the venue on Thursday, 20 October; a rare chance to see a number of the display cars in action.
The event's Collector Car & Memorabilia Auction will be another highlight. Conducted by Theodore Bruce, this year's Motorclassica auction will see a select group of around 30 cars and motorcycles cross the blocks, including a rare 1935 Lagonda M45 Rapide. Approximately 100 lots of automobilia and related ephemera will also be offered.
