The 1986 Lotus Excel blends classic Lotus handling with improved build quality and everyday usability in a front-engine Grand Tourer. Developed from the earlier Éclat and enhanced through Lotus’ collaboration with Toyota, the Excel S.E. features a galvanised chassis, Toyota-sourced drivetrain components, and the renowned Lotus-tuned suspension that delivers enhanced balance and ride. The S.E. option delivered a higher output engine, now producing 180hp with red cam covers, two 45mm twin choke Dellorto carbs, an adjustable steering column, and some other minor interior updates.
This example is a personal import, brought to Australia in late 1994. The Excel shows an indicated 62,226 miles travelled since new, but this is unable to be verified due to the limited history in the included documents. The Excel turns over but did not start and appears to be in complete order with some repairs required to get the car back to shape. This is a rare classic British grand tourer that is ready for restoration in a desirable S.E. option.
