VERY RARE ROTARY
The Cosmo was Mazda’s ‘Halo’ vehicle first unveiled to the public at the 1964 Tokyo Motor Show, which went into production from 1967–72 and only 1,176 first generation models were hand built (343 Series 1 & 833 Series 2). The Series 2 models had a slightly longer wheelbase (15cm), a revised lower front grille and air vents. Primarily sold in Japan, the Cosmo name hailed from the ‘space race’ captivating the world in the 60s.
Designed by Heiji Kobayashi, the distinctive compact shape features thin pillars with a large glass area highlighted by a prominent wrap around rear windscreen as well as glass covered headlights. Imported to Australia, this Series 2 example received a Victorian ‘Light Vehicle Modification Plate’ in July 2024.
Presented in the iconic combination of Aurora White over the hounds-tooth cloth and Black vinyl upholstery with contrasting red carpets the Cosmo rides on factory 15” steel wheels (Series 1, 14”). The original interior features a full instrument dashboard and an 80s stereo with graphic equaliser.
The lightweight Series 2 Cosmo tips the scales at 940kg, is powered by Mazda’s 982cc twin rotor Wankel 10A high revving engine and matched with a 5-speed gearbox (Series 1, 4-speed), which claimed to produce 128 horsepower (Series 1, 110 hp) and propels the elegant Cosmo from 0-100 km/h in 8.5 seconds with a top speed of 193 km/h.
This very rare and sought after first generation Series 2 Cosmo is now available for its next custodian to drive and enjoy, or even enter in car shows. It is sure to provide satisfaction for years to come, both on the road and admired statically.
