1991 porsche 944 s2 manual coupe
Seller's Description
The 944 S2 is the high-end “naturally aspirated” version of the 944, coming about late in the 944’s lifespan.
It replaced the earlier “944 S” model and is especially notable for its 3.0‑litre, twin‑cam (DOHC), 4‑cylinder engine - one of the largest displacement fours Porsche made at the time.
1991 S2s combined sporty performance, strong engineering, and quite good handling for the era. They're regarded as a desirable model among enthusiasts, particularly because you get many of the styling, braking, and chassis upgrades of the turbos without the turbo‑lag (or complexity) and at a lower cost of ownership.
ABOUT THIS CAR
There’s really nothing not t love about this car. Its balanced and poised. The engine is up front, but the transaxle is mounted at the rear. This gives near‑ideal front/rear weight distribution, which helps in cornering and gives the car very composed behavior mid‑corner. It revs nicely, has good torque (especially for a naturally aspirated 4‑cylinder), and delivers a smooth pull without turbos to worry about…and this, being a later one, it also has all the aerodynamic bits, larger wheels, better brakes etc.
Well serviced and maintained vehicle. In previous ownership, this car had over NZD30K invested in parts and labour in it. The clutch, timing belt and Balancer shaft belt were all installed to the Porsche Workshop Manual guidelines using Porsche tools as specified. This includes all new seals/gaskets/o rings etc to do the job correctly) – various receipts (servicing and maintenance records) available.
Had clutch kit and ancillaries done, had timing belt done, Water pump done, New Spark plugs and Fuel pump, damper and filter fitted, Tank strainer, Tension roller timing belt, changed rear main seal, Flywheel/pressure plate bolts, new thermostat, Caster bushings, CV boot and starter motor and rear wiper motor fitted.
Comes with relatively new tyres Bridgestone Potenza 225/50R16 and 205/55R16 and replacement Porsche windscreen fitted with correct Porsche fitting kit. Also, had new Air Conditioning compressor fitted and re gas
Beautiful clean body with nice paintwork.
Like the rest of the car, interior is in excellent condition.
Imported from Japan - first registered in New Zealand in August 2000.
Some parts come with car (see photo).
This is a very compelling car for someone who wants a classic Porsche with usable performance, strong mechanical pedigree, and a bit of “edge” without full turbo complexity.
If you can find one that’s been well looked after (good cooling, recent maintenance, clean body), it can be a very satisfying choice.
This is a beautiful example that demands respect and care - all part of its charm.
The highest auction sale price for a 1990 Porsche 944 S2 with comparable mileage in the past three years was NZ$73,500 making this example excellent value by comparison. That said, it's important to remember that many 944s passed through a phase of steep depreciation, during which some owners may have cut corners on maintenance. That’s why a strong service history, like the one this car offers, is just as crucial as reasonable mileage and fair pricing.
The 1991 Porsche 944 S2 is a rare car and is increasingly seen as a future classic, with values rising steadily, as enthusiasts and collectors reappraise the 944 series. Its appeal lies in the potent naturally aspirated 3.0L engine, exceptional chassis balance, practical 2+2 layout, and the unmistakable charm of late-‘80s Porsche engineering.
We could have confidently priced this car in the low-to-mid $60K range, but we've chosen to list it more attractively, giving the next owner a chance to truly appreciate it for what it is.
