So quiet and smooth. The Volt is most enjoyable car I've ever had to drive. Sad to see it go. Just get in and drive like any normal car. You can get the experience of owning an electric car without the significant cost of other brands. The only reason I'm selling is that I'm downsizing. You get a lot of car for the money. I think they are great value on the second hand market, because they are not well understood by the general public. They are robust and will have a long life, based on experience of the cars in the USA. The Holden Volt is an electric car with range extender. It is *not* a hybrid like a Prius. There is a lot of sophisticated engineering under the surface. It's a full battery electric vehicle. That means it runs on battery for the first 50 km [winter]- 70km [summer] and then switches to petrol with no loss in performance. The petrol generator only provides electricity to move the car, it does not charge the batteries. The idea is that your local trips can be done on electric but you can still long distances anywhere on petrol. Fuel economy is better than most cars of similar size, because a lot of effort has been put into improved efficiency and reduced wind resistance. This car is comfortable - Leather seats, full climate control, cruise control, and a nice Bose sound system are standard. There is plenty of room in the back under the hatchback for carrying luggage. You can drive the Volt on petrol only, but to get the most benefit you charge the batteries. It's easy, just plug into any power point. For most people, the practical way is to charge overnight. The car can be programmed to charge in off peak tariff hours to reduce costs. There is a light on top of the dash so you can tell when the car is fully charged from outside. The petrol engine is under control of the car computer. Operating as a generator, it only runs when the battery is flat, or you can request the engine to run, saving battery charge if you wish. [Hold mode.] Then the engine cycles on and off as needed. The petrol engine is treated very gently by the car computer and will have a long life. Services are at nine month intervals, and are about $180. This car has been serviced by Holden dealers only at the correct intervals. With regenerative braking, brake pads much longer, and the wheels don't get brake dust on them, so easy to clean.
