TRIVIA
Having all the mechanical componentry up front made it easier to stretch and customise the Toronado without having to consider changes to the tailshaft, diff, etc. American Quality Coach Co. built a small number of Toronado-based 'airport limousines' with dual rear axles, distinctive raised roofs, four doors each side and room for up to fifteen passengers. One of the most notable examples of what could be done was a 1970 GT model that was converted into a one-off luxury long wheelbase motorhome, complete with shower, kitchen, fridge and enough space to sleep three adults.
The Toronado's high standard of finish is often attributed to the fact that - for a time - Toronado production was carried out on a separate assembly line from other Oldsmobile models, and at a slower speed than other lines, so more care, time and attention could be devoted to putting these cars together right the first time.
