2019 Bay to Birdwood Classic preview

One of the world’s great historic motoring events is just around the corner – the Bay to Birdwood is on Sunday 29 September and it’s a “Classic” year.
Featuring vehicles from 1956 to 1986, this year’s event has sold out for entrants, reaching its capacity of 1,750 vehicles some weeks ago, with vehicles entering from every state in Australia.
There are plenty of opportunities to join the 60,000 plus spectators, though, with ample viewing positions on streets along the 60km route from Barratt Reserve in West Beach to the National Motor Museum in Birdwood.
Expect to see early Commodores and ’80s Falcons, Japanese cars and motorcycles from the ’70s and ’80s, as well as older trucks, classic British bikes and other ’56-’86 vehicles.
To see the assembled cars, trucks and bikes BEFORE they hit the road, get yourself to Barratt Reserve in West Beach (near the Adelaide Airport). The day kicks off at 6:00 am with public viewing of the vehicles before the first cars are waved away at 8:30 am.
The route takes in Greenhill Road, heading from Anzac Highway and Fullarton Rd., passing Adelaide’s eastern parks before turning on to North East Rd.
At Civic Park in Modbury (approx. 40km from Barratt Reserve) an alternate start point has been added. There will be lots of free family entertainment at the Park and many in the parade from West Beach will use the site as a stopover and ‘comfort stop’, too.
Beyond Modbury, the route heads into the Adelaide Hills and takes in Chain of Ponds and Gumeracha before finishing at the National Motor Museum.
The museum gates open at 10:00 am, with vehicles expected to arrive from 11:00 am. The awards for Concours d'Elegance and Preservation class will be run at Birdwood, as well as the ‘Fashions in the Field’ competition. There will be live music and family entertainment all day, as well as food vendors and plenty of children's activities. For details, go to: baytobirdwood.com.au
