Alpine hits heights at Shannons
Believed to be an original 'lightweight competition cliente' 1300S model, the '72 Alpine was imported from New Caledonia and restored for the vendor by Melbourne-based marque specialists Alpine Affaire over a 14-year period.
Converted to RHD during the restoration, the mid-mounted engine was enlarged to 1550cc 'rally spec' at the same time and rebodied with a new lightweight shell, with the finishing touch being the traditional French 'Tricolore' national three-colour scheme.
With its spec and performance, the A110 would make for an entertaining road-going vehicle as well as a competitive machine for classic rallying. Reflecting the growing adoption of Shannons online bidding option introduced this year, the winning bid for the Alpine came from an online bidder.
Other French cars to sell well at the Melbourne auction included a 1960 ID19 sedan ($17,000) and 1948 Light 15 sedan ($25,750). Away from France, a pair of MGAs sold for more than $25,000 each, a Group Nb Jaguar Mk II racer made $34,000, while a No Reserve 1961 Dodge Polara was another highlight on the night, selling for a very impressive $46,000.
