Alvis expands ‘Continuation Series’ production
Under the control of parent company, Red Triangle, the manufacture of replacement parts, servicing and restoration of original Alvis cars by ‘The Alvis Car Company’ has been going on for many years. More recently, a ‘Continuation Series’ of new Alvis cars, hand-built in the style of the original models, was added.
That programme has now been expanded, with The Alvis Car Company offering two different chassis and six different body derivatives, based on those originally produced by the likes of Park Ward, Graber and Vanden Plas.
A choice of 3.0-litre and 4.3-litre six-cylinder engines will be available, based on original Works designs, but with modern fuel injection and engine management software making them road-legal for a number of markets. The 3.0-litre models use original chassis and engine blocks that have been in storage since production of the original Alvis models ended in 1967, while 4.3-engined versions will be scratch built to original factory plans.
“Our models are, literally, what Alvis would have created had it not halted production for over 50 years,” explains Alan Stote, owner of The Alvis Car Company.
In 1938, the factory had planned to build 150 4.3-litre chassis, but bomb damage in WWII meant only 73 were completed. The new chassis will be built to the same specs, using the original drawings.
The 3.0-litre models are available in a choice of three body styles using hand-formed aluminium panels, with a standard five-speed manual transmission and disc brakes all round. An automatic, power steering and servo-assisted brakes are optional.
On the 4.3-litre vehicles, three body styles are offered, with a six-speed manual and disc brakes standard. Air conditioning, a range of audio systems and matching luggage sets are options.
Each Continuation Series Alvis takes between 4,000 and 5,000 hours to build, made to an individual specification. Purchasers are encouraged to visit the factory and see the production process and view the company’s history files when personalising their vehicle.
To date, the Continuation Series has generated international interest, despite price tags of around AU$500,000 per vehicle, with Alvis’s former agent in Japan ordering five of the new cars. Road legality and compliance of the Continuation Series Alvis models for Australia has not been confirmed.
