Aussie muscle features at Shannons Melbourne auction
In a sale comprising 72 lots, the top seller was a 1971 Ford XY Falcon GT sedan. Despite being finished in the GT’s common Vermillion Fire with black vinyl trim, the top seller was one of just 14 examples in the same combination of specifications from a total of 1,530 XY GTs built.
Sold new in Hobart, the XY GT came to auction with 58,000 miles on the odometer and had been described as one of the best unrestored examples going around. The original owner’s manual and factory wallet, period Falcon GT brochure and spare set of keys were included too.
Bidding started at $220,000 and increased in $10,000 and $5,000 increments as two bidders duelled for the car, before the hammer finally fell at $370,000 - a new auction record for a non-HO XY GT.
A 1968 XT Falcon GT, a restored example in Zircon Green with a black vinyl interior, sold for $106,000, just short of its $110,000 low estimate, while a one-owner 1973 Chrysler VH Charger XL 245, in Hot Mustard and carrying many period accessories, was passed in.
Of the Holdens, a 1970 HG Monaro GTS with the 186S six-cylinder engine and unusual combination of a 4-speed manual and 10-bolt LSD came to auction as an older restoration and sold for $56,000 against a $60K low estimate. Another ’70 HG Monaro GTS, upgraded from its original 308 to a 350 V8 and with non-original paint and interior trim, was passed in, but a new Monaro fared better.
The 2005-model Monaro CV8-Z was described as the last manual transmission Monaro built and came to auction from a private collection with just 20,603km showing. Finished in its original Fusion (gold) paint with black/gold leather trim, the CV8-Z sold within estimate for $55,000.
The hero amongst the Holdens was a 1985 HDT VK Commodore Group A SS – the iconic ‘Blue Meanie’.
The sixth example built, finished in the correct Formula Blue paint with grey-blue velour trim, the VK SS was described as a low kilometre example, well cared for but showing its age.
With signatures from Peter Brock, Phil Brock and John Harvey on the glovebox lid adding to the value, the car sold for $145,000 to be the best-selling Holden from the auction.
