Aussie' Mustang production begins
RHD Mustang assembly is now underway at Ford's Flat Rock Assembly Plant in Michigan, with the first examples expected to reach Australia before the end of 2015.
Pre-production LHD Mustangs have been touring Australian Ford dealerships for the past few months, building up interest in the sixth-generation 'pony car' before it officially arrives here in RHD form.
While the Mustang has been officially imported here in small numbers in the past, the new, sixth-generation version marks the first time that Ford's sports coupe has been factory built in right hand drive.
Australia is one of more than 25 RHD markets that will receive the new Mustang as part of the global 'One Ford' strategy. The UK, South Africa, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, Cyprus, Malta and some of the Caribbean islands will also receive factory RHD Mustangs.
More than 3,000 pre-orders have already been received in Australia, a figure which Ford said shattered pre-arrival sales expectations. This compares very well against the UK - a much bigger market - where 2,000 orders have been taken since January this year, but that total is reportedly in excess of Ford's expectations for that market, too. In New Zealand, 400 orders have been received, with customer deliveries to begin shortly.
